Exchange Traded Funds ETFs are baskets of stocks or bonds that track an index, but are traded on an exchange and can be bought and sold during the course of the trading day. Initially, the sites providing the most complete information on ETFs were the exchanges on which the funds were traded: American Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, and sponsors: Barclays Global Investors iShares, Claymore, First Trust Portfolios, Merrill Lynch HOLDRS, PowerShares, Rydex, Select Sector SPDRs, State Street Global Advisors street TRACKS, Vanguard VIPERs and WisdomTree Trust. Some ETFs have their own sites: BLDRS, Diamonds, Dow Jones Select MicroCap Index, Fidelity Nasdaq Tracking Stock, Rydex Euro Currency Trust, streetTRACKS Gold Shares, and United States Oil Fund. Because of their rapidly growing popularity and importance to investors, a number of independent sites have provided information and advice on ETFs, including: ETF Connect, ETF Guide, ETF Investor, ETFZone.com, ExchangeTradedFunds.com, and XTF Advisors, which has a good screening tool. Index Universe, publisher of Journal of Indexes, offers an extensive screen for indexes, index funds and ETFs. Also, many of the major investment sites cover ETFs, including CNN/Money, Fidelity, Lipper, MarketWatch, Morningstar, Reuters, SmartMoney and Yahoo! Finance. Blogs are a growing, but mixed, source of information. Two examples are ETF Reader and ETF Trends. A growing number of ETFs are based on such specialized indexes as Mergent's Dividend Achievers, AMEX's Intellidexes, Palisades Water Index and Wilder Hill Clean Energy Index and the FTSE RAFI Index. See an opinion from Morningstar about some of the new ETFs. For a detailed examination of ETFs, read Gary
